VIMS

VIMS Overview - Get to Know Us

Welcome to VIMS!

"As one of the largest and most respected marine research and education centers in the country, VIMS is unique among its peers.  As both a school of William & Mary (the School of Marine Science) and a stand-alone advisory agency for the Commonwealth, we are deeply embedded in the communities we serve, and have the expertise and resources necessary to provide practical and meaningful guidance to policy makers and the public in highly-used and heavily-populated coastal and estuarine systems." - VIMS Dean & Director D. Derek Aday

Dean & Director Aday serves as the chief executive officer of VIMS and the School of Marine Science (SMS). He reports to the William & Mary President for matters relating to the state-mandated responsibilities of VIMS and to the William & Mary Provost for academic matters.

William & Mary Human Resources provides information and resources related to employment, including general onboarding, required forms and paperwork, orientations, and what to expect in the first days as a new employee.

In order to obtain a VIMS e-mail account and obtain required VIMS safety training, all new VIMS employees should initiate the VIMS Check-In process (pdf) as soon as possible.

Volunteers and visiting scientists, postdocs, and students receive VIMS safety training and may receive a VIMS email account.  The Volunteer/Visiting Scientist/Visiting Student/Visiting Post-Doc Check-In Form (pdf) is available through the Faculty & Staff Gateway and should be returned to VIMS' Assistant Director of Outreach & Engagement.  See the form for details.

Organizational Structure

Three Academic Research Sections are designed to support research and discovery around core focus areas where VIMS is addressing grand challenges and leading science for solutions to address global change:

  • Coastal & Ocean Processes - connecting global trends and local drivers to understand and address environmental change
  • Ecosystem Health - connecting physical, chemical, biological, and socioeconomic systems to address environmental and community vulnerabilities
  • Natural Resources -  providing translational science for sustainable management of coastal socio-ecological systems, especially fisheries and aquaculture

Learn more about the organizational structure in this Q&A with Dean & Director Aday. While VIMS faculty, staff, and students affiliate with a primary section for administrative processes, we are highly collegial and collaborative, and interactions across sections are encouraged.

VIMS was founded as the Virginia Fisheries Laboratory (VFL) in 1940 through the efforts of Dr. Donald W. Davis, then chair of the William & Mary Biology Department. The VFL was named the Virginia Institute of Marine Science by an Act of Virginia's General Assembly in 1962.  VIMS returned to the administrative umbrella of William & Mary in 1979.
