Aquaculture & Environmental Interactions
Clam and oyster aquaculture involve direct interaction with the surrounding environment. The gear used in aquaculture, more specifically oyster aquaculture, provide structure that help maintain other important habitats (e.g. submerged aquatic vegetation), can help slow the rate of shoreline erosion, and provide substrate for many species to adhere to and seek refuge in, increasing biodiversity both within and surrounding an aquaculture operation. There is a growing need to better understand the ecological impacts of aquaculture on the surrounding ecosystem as the industry hopes to expand.
